Be Still and Know (Psalm 46)

ABOUT

Based on Psalm 46, this song attempts to capture the confidence God’s people can have in the midst of turmoil. Nothing is a match for the power of God to preserve his people in the face of difficult circumstances or threats from his enemies. For, God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. The final verse lifts our eyes to the reward awaiting God’s people—a shining city—the holy habitation of the Most High, where sorrows will be no more and joy will be our portion for all time.

LYRICS

CHORUS
MEN:
Be still and know that He is God.
Be still and know that He is God.
He will be exalted in the nations.
He will be exalted in the earth.
WOMEN:
Be still and know.
He is exalted in the heavens and nations.
He will be exalted in the earth.

VERSE 1
Though mountains sink in oceans,
The waters roar and foment,
We will not fear! Our hope is in the Lord!
The nations rage against Him.
He speaks, they melt before Him.
O come, behold the glory of the Lord!

VERSE 2
Though earth gives way beneath us
And foes advance to seize us.
He breaks their bows, enkindles them in fire.
The Lord of hosts is with us.
He is our God and Fortress.
His mercies follow with each morning rise.

VERSE 3
There is a river swelling
Its banks in heav’nly dwelling—
The holy habitation of our God.
That City shines with gladness,
There dwells no tears, no sadness.
There joy shall be our portion for all time.
