Call to Worship from Isaiah 55

“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David.”

(Isaiah 55:1–3 ESV)

Exhortation:

God does not invite us to himself based on our accomplishments, credentials, reputation, successes, social status, or wealth. No, he invites those who thirst. In other words, God appeals to us not on the basis of what we have, but on what we lack. To be thirsty means you need something. You need God. You need forgiveness. You need the grace only He can give. There are no VIP invitations, no first-class passengers. He accepts those who come to Him empty-handed. He satisfies those who come thirsty and gives to them his steadfast love which was promised to David, which we know, was accomplished through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Christ Jesus. As we come to Him through Jesus, let us rejoice together in our loving, gracious, covenant-making God!
